Half Truths

A proverb is a short, popular saying, often of unknown or ancient origin, that effectively expresses some commonplace truth or useful thought, adage, or maxim. There are dozens of these popular sayings floating around that people believe in, trust in, and offer to others as advice in times of need. They are simple phrases that sound Christian–like something you might find in the pages of the Bible. However, these, so called “Christian cliches, biblical misquotes, and phantom passages” are at best, half truths; in that even though they may capture some element of truth, they miss the point in other important ways. Phrases like: “Cleanliness is next to Godliness,” “Honesty is the best policy,” “God won’t give you more than you can handle.”

Sayings like these are dangerous because they can lead people to conclusions about God that are not only untrue, but actually push people away from God. As one person writes; “A half truth is worse then a whole lie.”

This 5-week series will look at some of these half truths, in light of God’s Word; and it’s my hope that examining them will lead us to a deeper understanding of the ultimate truth that we find only in Jesus.
