Lent is a season in the Church that is set apart each year for slowing down, for spiritual attentiveness, and for honest preparation. From the earliest days of the Christian community, the weeks leading up to Holy Week and Easter have been understood not as a time of spiritual achievement, but as a time of return: a return to God, a return to truth, and a return to what matters most. During the forty days of Lent we’re invited to stop and to step out of the noise and busyness of ordinary life and to look inward–to listen more attentively, and to examine in our hearts what often goes unexamined. Through prayer, repentance, fasting, generosity, and deeper engagement with Scripture, we’re reminded that faith isn’t just about outward actions, but about inward formation. It’s not just about what we do, but who we are becoming. And so, Lent asks searching questions of us–not to burden us with guilt, but to open us to healing and spiritual growth. It asks us to consider where our loves are misplaced, where our trust has grown thin, where our hearts have become distracted, hardened, or weary. And it does so with a clear purpose: to prepare us to encounter once again the centre of our faith: the saving death and glorious resurrection of Jesus Christ.
This sermon series will focus on the kind of heart that God desires, not as a checklist for self-improvement, but as an invitation to transformation. We’ll explore what it means to have a heart that’s broken and honest before God, a heart that listens, trusts, shows compassion, and remains faithful. As we journey toward the cross and the empty tomb, our prayer is that God would gently shape our hearts to resemble His own, so that when we come to celebrate Easter, we do so not only remembering what Christ has done for us but renewed in who we are becoming in Him.
