This week we begin the season of Advent, which is derived from the Latin word ‘adventus,’ which means “coming or arrival.” Advent is a season marked by expectation, anticipation, and longing, as we prepare to celebrate the coming of Jesus–not just in His first advent, as a baby in Bethlehem, but also in His second coming, as King in glory. Despite what many people think, Advent isn’t just an extension of Christmas, but a season that links the past, present, and future. Long before the manger in Bethlehem, the people of God watched and waited in darkness, longing for deliverance, and listening to the voices of prophets who spoke of a coming Messiah, a great Light that would pierce the night. Advent invites us into that same waiting: honest about the shadows in our world and in ourselves, yet full of hope that God has not forgotten His promises.
This four-week sermon series is journey from darkness to dawn, that will follow the rising light of Christ through the words of the prophets and the Gospel. Each Sunday will lead us deeper into the story of God’s faithfulness: from hope in the waiting, to peace in repentance, to joy in His promise, and finally to love made flesh in Emmanuel.
In a world that often feels shadowed by fear and uncertainty, Advent reminds us that the dawn of God’s redeeming light is already breaking through, and it will not be overcome. “Maran Atha: Come, Lord Jesus, Come!”
