Colossians: The Supremacy of Christ

“He is the image of the invisible God, the first born of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
(Colossians 1:15-17)

From whatever angle one views our current culture, the book of Colossians is up to date. We live in an age where everyone is trying to live richer, fuller lives. We’re told to buy this, try that, eat those, and say no to the rest, as if that’s all we need to do to make our lives complete. Two thousand years ago, the church at Colossae faced similar challenges, and the Apostle Paul wrote this letter outlining the only way to live complete lives: Christ. Called by many scholars the “most profound letter Paul ever wrote,” Colossians warrants a careful, faithful study because it makes the case for the supremacy of Christ in all things; and outlines Paul’s essential thoughts on living a complete life–in Christ alone. This series is an in-depth, verse by verse, study of this short, but inspiring letter which makes the very clear argument that wrong teaching always leads to wrong living, and unless doctrine leads to duty, it’s useless to us. The message of Colossians is simple: If Christ is truly preeminent in our lives, then we will glorify Him by keeping pure, by enjoying fellowship with other saints, by loving each other at home and being faithful at work, and by seeking to witness to Christ and serve Him effectively. Although it was written nearly 2000 years ago, this ancient text has contemporary value–its timeless message speaks to the dilemmas facing us today, and in every case, presents Jesus as the answer.
